Tan antiguo como el deporte mismo son las tierras donde se creó el fútbol actual; en territorio inglés a mediados del siglo XVII.
Los ingleses fueron también los primeros en crear la primera liga oficial de fútbol en el año 1888 llamándose The Football League luego llamada Football League First Division. Tras algunas fusiones y divisiones en 1992 nace la Premier League como se conoce actualmente a la máxima categoría del fútbol inglés.

Los máximos ganadores de la liga inglesa ostentan hoy un legado histórico con más de un siglo de existencia. La liga inglesa es considerada por expertos como la liga de fútbol más competitiva del mundo.
